Plastic Thermoforming is the process of heating
sheet plastic and forming it into or over a mold. The Thermoforming process
uses vacuum, air pressure and/or mechanical forming assists to move the
softened plastic in contact with the shape of the forming mold. Thermoforming
molds are usually made of aluminum and are water cooled. When the heated
and softened plastic comes in contact with the cool mold the plastic sets
in the shape of the mold. Plastic Thermoforming companies usually specialize
in either thin gauge or thick gauge Thermoforming. Thin gauge Thermoforming
usually refers to a pre forming material thickness range from ( 005" to
.080") inch thickness. Heavy gauge continues from that point to thickness
in excess of 1/2".
At FormTex Plastics
Corporation we specialize in thin gauge Thermoforming of medium and
high volume packaging. Items that we regularly Thermoform are retail packaging
such as clamshell packaging ,
blister
packaging and industrial
product holding trays. Along with Thermoformed plastic packaging we
make several types of reusable and disposable plastic trays for handling
and shipping sensitive electronic components, computer components, medical
devices and general sub components. Many manufacturers of components find
value in having a formed plastic tray that hold an exact amount of their
items. This gives them a higher level of inventory control and product
protection during transport. Often custom formed plastic trays are filled
with component items as they are manufactured. The trays are used for organizing
products. This allows for accurate inventory control. The tray also serves
as a protective component in the internal handling and final shipping.
At the recipients operation the tray holding an exact number of items can
be used for much the same purposes.
Thermoformed plastic trays can benefit many aspects
of a manufacturing operation. A formed tray having individual compartments
that are fitted for and exact amount of items makes it easy to inventory
product. Several trays can be stacked in a box for shipping. This greatly
improves the organization of individual items and also serves to protect
the product during shipping.
